PAUL FEYERABEND (1924–1994) was a provocative and influential Austrian-born philosopher of science who is best known for his flamboyant critique of rationalism. Deeply influenced by his background in physics, history, and the arts, Feyerabend championed a unique approach known as epistemological anarchism , summarized in the phrase "anything goes", which asserted that no single, rational methodological rule has ever been consistently followed in scientific progress, nor should one be imposed.
His most famous and controversial work, AGAINST METHOD: OUTLINE OF AN ANARCHISTIC THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE (1975; 4th edition, 2010), fundamentally shook the foundations of philosophy. Feyerabend argued that the success of science is due to its inherently chaotic and creative nature, and that strict adherence to fixed methodological rules—such as consistency or the requirement that new theories match existing data—actually hinders scientific progress rather than helping it. Using Galileo’s defense of Copernicanism as a case study, he demonstrated that major breakthroughs often require the deliberate violation of established logical norms.
Feyerabend expanded his critique into the political and social realms with SCIENCE IN A FREE SOCIETY (1978), in which he argued that science had become a restrictive ideology, much like the state-sponsored religions of the past. He advocated for a more democratic approach to knowledge, suggesting that in a truly free society, scientific "experts" should not hold ultimate authority over the lives of citizens. He insisted that various traditions and perspectives—including those dismissed as "unscientific"—deserve equal protection and consideration within the public sphere.
In later works, such as FAREWELL TO REASON (1987), Feyerabend continued his assault on the idea of objective, universal truth, arguing for a "relativism" that encourages cultural diversity and recognizes the historical specificity of western rationalism. His autobiography, KILLING TIME (1995), provided a candid look at the personal experiences and historical upheavals—including his service in WWII—that shaped his rebellious intellectual trajectory. In the posthumously published CONQUEST OF ABUNDANCE (1999), Feyerabend is fascinated by how we attempt to explain and predict the mysteries of the natural world, and he looks at the ways in which we abstract experience, explain anomalies, and reduce wonder to formulas and equations.
Finally, the four volumes of Feyerabend’s PHILOSOPHICAL PAPERS (1981–2016) map his journey from a technical philosopher of physics to a radical pluralist, showcasing the deep intellectual scaffolding beneath his later "anarchist" persona. The first volume, REALISM, RATIONALISM AND SCIENTIFIC METHOD (1981), provides a broad overview of his philosophical journey, including his early work on the philosophy of science, his critique of logical positivism, and his evolving thoughts on methodological anarchism. The essays in volume 2, PROBLEMS OF EMPIRICISM (1981), examine the origin and history of an abstract rationalism, as well as its consequences for the philosophy of science and methods of scientific research. The third volume, KNOWLEDGE, SCIENCE AND RELATIVISM (1999), treats classic questions in the philosophy of science, including theoretical pluralism, the relationship between theory and observation, the distinction between science and myth, the role of science in society, and the vexed question of the nature of scientific method. The final volume, PHYSICS AND PHILOSOPHY (2016), documents Feyerabend's deep concern with the philosophical implications of quantum physics and its interpretations, and provides the crucial background for his critiques of Karl Popper and Thomas Kuhn.
