MEDIAINFO
The Devils was scanned in 4K from an original 1971 UK X-Rated scope 35mm print. The print was unfaded and in excellent condition overall. In comparison to the UK retail DVD of the same version (there is no official Blu-Ray release), the 35mm source print looses only 2s 08fr over 9 splices including each of the seven reels heads & tales making it virtually complete. The joins between Reels 1>2, 3>4 & 6>7 are frame-complete.
This is the longest original theatrical release version, although various longer versions are available on DVD which have excised footage edited back in. Asides from a Japanese AI upscaled Blu-Ray, and a 720p streaming release of the shorter R-Rated version, this the only proper Blu-Ray version available anywhere in the world, and certainly the highest resolution. Given the combination of strong sexual, violent, torture & religious imagery, this won't be everyone's cup of tea. It seems like WB don't want to deal with the 'trigger minefield' either, given the lack of any proper HD release, but it's a very important preservation non-the-less.
This is a 4K Cintel scan (as opposed to most of my other scans; which are 5K Scanstation scans) The quality is still very decent. You'll notice above that the raw scan looks very bright. Once the LUT is applied in Resolve, the levels are automatically adjusted to a more normal level, and you grade from there. As a Cintel scan, you can see tell-tail vertical noise/lines in the raw frame blacks, which are mostly hidden once the lower black level is set during grading.
This grade was done in Resolve, using Premiere only for a couple of final tweaks & encoding. The only identical version I can really use for comparison is the UK DVD, which you can see above. There is more frame visible on every side. While the source print looked excellent, the 35mm colour restoration took some work as the raw print was a real patchwork of very slight variations in colour. The LUT did 80% of the correction automatically, but still required a shot by shot tweaking in places.
The only slight differences between this 35mm print, and the UK retail DVD, are the BBFC rating, and the updated Warner Bros ident; both at the start.
Overall, the retail UK DVD has much lower contrast; dimmer whites and brighter blacks. Everything is pushed from either end towards the mid-range. The 35mm print is a far bit brighter. The colours cycled from slightly blue, neutral and some a little too-red, blue, yellow & green shots which needed to be broken down and corrected individually. To add to that, a good number of the scenes are predominantly made up of white elements. If a forest scene is graded to be slightly more or less green, that would be virtually imperceptible. Even a small tint, whites stand out a mile so needed more careful tweaking. The audio here is dual mono, taken from the 35mm optical strip.
This is a crowdfunded film scan, brought to you by 'Rob's Nostalgia Projects', strictly for entertainment purposes. In watching this set, you are still expected to own at least one legally purchased copy, if available. This release is intended as a companion to any official retail versions, not an alternative.
