Jay Leno's Garage Restoration Blog: November 2025 - Aired Nov. 10 2025
Welcome to another action-packed episode of Jay Leno's Garage: Restoration Edition! This week, we give you a full rundown of four major projects currently consuming the shop, ranging from classic British luxury to pre-war race specials.
The Mark IX Preservation Challenge: Our latest project, a barn-find 1961 Jaguar Mark IX donated by the Audrain Museum, is undergoing a delicate preservation. The goal is to keep the original 51,000-mile paint and original leather interior. Jay and the team are debating polishing the fragile lacquer versus leaving the "checking" as part of its history. To improve its driveability, the unreliable original Borg-Warner automatic is being swapped for a modern GM 700R4 overdrive transmission using a kit that maintains the original column shifter.
High-Speed Race & Bike Updates: Next, we check in on the Lancia Aurelia-based race car, where the team has finished the custom headers and exhaust for the 488 horsepower V6 engine. This naturally-aspirated terror is built to rev close to 10,000 RPM! We also have a full update on the 1940 Indian Four motorcycle and sidecar, rebuilt after Jay's mishap. It’s back together with new forks and a rebuilt clutch and transmission. Plus, we give an update on the massive, ongoing "Barnes Special" Pikes Peak race car with its Cadillac engine, LaSalle transmission, and aircraft brakes.
Electric Future & Secret Tools: Finally, Jay reveals the shop's new Laser Welder, a $50,000 machine that can fuse steel and aluminum up to 5/16" thick and is being used to build parts for the Barnes Special. We then visit the "Secret Laser Room" where Jay and Jim are working on the complex modern wiring for the 1914 Detroit Electric conversion. This antique is being modernized with air conditioning, Bluetooth, and a 400-volt Nissan Leaf battery system
