Precise and consistent communication is vital in the complex and ever-expanding field of cybersecurity and its related domains. This hyperglossary offers more than just plain English definitions of 5,555 terms and abbreviations; it’s a meticulously crafted resource designed to foster a shared understanding across a diverse audience, from seasoned professionals to newcomers. By providing clear definitions and an innovative network of hyperlinked references, it enhances communication in critical areas, reduces misunderstandings, and facilitates a more engaging and interconnected learning experience across the broad landscape of information risk and security, privacy, governance, compliance, business continuity, ethics, and more.
Beyond basic definitions, this book delves into the nuances and origins of cybersecurity language, promoting vocabulary standardisation and reducing misinterpretations in various professional contexts. Furthermore, it bridges the communication gap between technical experts and non-technical stakeholders, empowering effective collaboration and informed decision-making. This book is a key tool for education and professional development, supported by a vibrant online community where experts collaborate to refine and evolve our terms of art. Ultimately, this comprehensive hyperglossary, coupled with community insights, offers an unparalleled advantage in navigating and shaping the future of cybersecurity understanding.
Information security was a novelty back then, one that intrigued me with its focus on protecting and exploiting information. Since then, we’ve seen the rise of IT security and lately cybersecurity as computing and the Internet have become integral parts of modern life. Nevertheless, I appreciate that original focus on protecting and exploiting the valuable information content: to me, the computer systems and technologies are merely tools for data processing (now there’s an historic term!).
Cybersecurity: in common use, this primarily refers to technological/IT security controls protecting computer systems, networks, and the associated data against attacks from the Internet. There’s more to it, though. The field can appear fragmented and scattered, with experts in various areas naturally developing their own jargon and specialised meanings. To address the challenge, I developed the hyperglossary format in 2001, making a reference resource even more valuable. I find the combination of clear plain-English definitions with embedded links to further information a powerful and intuitive way to capture and utilise the details. What’s more, it’s fun to release my inner geek, following my nose from term-to-term, rediscovering and reconnecting with concepts I’d almost forgotten much as I enjoyed browsing Roget’s Thesaurus and encyclopaedias when I was a teen.
Hyperglossary: contraction of hyperlinked glossary, an intuitive reference combining the best features of a glossary, dictionary, wiki, thesaurus, and encyclopaedia with specialist inputs, plain English definitions, and extensive cross-referencing
